Over the Easter holiday, a man was driving his rented Ferrari 812 Superfast around the luxurious seaside town of Biarritz, France. Unfortunately for him, he wound up concluding his journey on foot.
According to French National Police, much to the driver's surprise, the exotic sports car had been reported stolen; the driver was questioned and released, but the car was impounded.
According to a report by Italpassion, the man had been renting the Ferrari for several months for €2000 (about US$ 2,300) a month—not a bad rate for a car that can be worth around US$ 400,000. The renter was dutifully making the payments; however, police say the rental agency wasn’t. Reportedly, the agency stopped sending money to the actual owner of the Ferrari, so the owner then decided to report the car stolen.
Of course, a Rosso Corsa 812 Superfast doesn’t exactly blend into traffic, even in a glamorous town like Biarritz; police spotted the stolen car and took the bewildered driver to the police station for questioning. Police confirmed that the renter didn’t do anything wrong, and he was quickly released. But the Ferrari he'd been enjoying had to stay behind.
Ultimately, this bizarre roadside seizure serves as a cautionary tale for the high-end rental market. While the driver was legally cleared of any criminal intent, he still paid the price of a visit to the police station and possibly the loss of some of his rental payments.
And as the legal battle between the owner and the rental agency revs up, the stunning Ferrari 812 Superfast sits in a silent impound lot. Suffice it to say, it’s a messy conclusion to a dream drive, one that left the owner fighting for his asset ... and the renter searching for a new set of wheels.
