Why Was "Star Trek: Starfleet Academy" Cancelled?

Starfleet Academy
Well, it's obvious from the first episode that some interstellar journeys are not meant to last long and it appears we're already approaching the end of the road for "Star Trek: Starfleet Academy."

Only weeks after season 1 came to a stirring conclusion and with filming on season 2 already in the can, Variety reports that Paramount has decided not to move forward with future seasons of the series. This comes because "Starfleet Academy" season is not garnering enough positive reviews and being what seemed like a forced inclusion agenda when it should have been courting the die-hard fans and their much younger family menbers.

Many notes that the cancellation came as a result of low viewership numbers, with none of the 10 total episodes in its first season managing to crack Nielsen's top 10 streaming charts.

In the ruthless and crowded world of streaming television, not even one of the most famous names in science fiction could cut through the noise. This leads any fan to wonder about the ratings for "Strange New Worlds" and "Discovery," which were able to run for five seasons each (with the former's fourth season premiering this year, and final season already filmed).

The other reasons are the following:

  1. Low Viewership & High Costs: The primary reason for cancellation was the inability to secure a consistent, large audience, resulting in low ratings on Nielsen's streaming charts despite being a high-budget production.
  2. "Woke" & Creative Backlash: Many viewers criticized the show's creative direction, labeling it as overly focused on modern identity politics ("woke") and deviating too far from traditional Star Trek storytelling. There are also several scenes of crying, shouting and other variants of LGBT agenda.
  3. Failed to Connect: Industry analysts and critics noted the series failed to resonate with the broader audience, leading to its cancellation after only one aired season, with a second season set to conclude the story.
  4. Impact of Criticism: The backlash led to intense online discussions, with some viewers expressing disinterest in the new, experimental direction compared to established Star Trek themes.
