Roblox is overhauling how kids access games on its platform, looking to tackle child safety concerns as it has come under increasing scrutiny in recent years.
The company announced an update coming in June that will introduce two new age-based account levels, restricting access to a limited set of games and features for kids under 9 and gradually opening up for kids between 9 and 15. It’s also introducing some new parental control features that give parents more of a say in what their kids can access.
Roblox has been the subject of dozens of lawsuits and government investigations over allegations that it hasn’t done enough to protect kids from exploitation on its platform. Late in 2025, the company introduced age checks and locked down certain chat features based on age. The game has more than 140 million daily active users, many of which are children.
"This update will bring age-checks, account-level defaults, content ratings, ongoing moderation, and expanded parental controls together into a unified framework for younger users," Roblox said in the post announcing the new features. "Based on our selection criteria, we believe age-checked users under 16 will have access to the vast majority of their favorite games at launch. Age-checked users 16 and older will not see any change to their Roblox experience."
The two new account types are called Roblox Kids (ages 5 to 8) and Roblox Select (ages 9 to 15). Kids accounts are limited to games with "minimal"” or "mild" content maturity ratings and have undergone a three-step review process. Chat is also disabled by default for kids accounts. Select accounts can play games with content maturity ratings up to and including moderate and have passed the three-step review process. Chat for select accounts is "gradually introduced with safeguards," Roblox says.
Accounts that don’t perform an age verification check will be automatically assigned a Roblox Kids account with all of its restrictions. Parents will be able to use the full suite of parental controls with Kids accounts, while Select accounts retain all parental controls through age 12, then have certain features and visibility into them through age 15, Roblox says.
The company says it’s also says it’s adding the following improvements to parental controls:
- Extending granular game blocking: Parents can block specific individual games through age 15.
- Extending chat management: Parents can manage direct chat settings through age 15.
- New granular game approval: Parents can now approve access to specific games that are not otherwise available under the child’s default account type.
It then assigns content maturity ratings to games. "By default, Roblox Kids and Roblox Select accounts will not include games that feature sensitive issues, social hangouts, or free-form drawing games," Roblox says.
