Astro Bot, a PlayStation 5 (PS5) platform game, just won the top prize at the videogame industry's biggest awards ceremony. This choice took many people online by surprise, which, of course, meant folks sprinted to social media to express their feelings.
The cute and colourful PlayStation platformer beat Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth, Black Myth: Wukong, Metaphor: Refantazio Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree and Balatro to be named Game of the Year at The Game Awards.
Accepting the trophy, Nicolas Doucet, studio head of developer Team Asobi, appeared to pay tribute to rival Nintendo.
Astro Bot also picked up three other awards - Best Family Game, Best Action/Adventure and Best Game Direction.
The game itself is a 3D platformer, where players control the eponymous character, Astro Bot, as it explores and moves through imaginary worlds.
Reviewers, both professional and amateur, have been glowing about the title, with Metacritic showing universal acclaim from both. Currently, Astro Bot sits at 94 score from critics and 9.2 from users, both close to the respective 100 and 10 limits.
