A few days ago, Sony announced it will stop producing PlayStation discs in 2028, but the situation is more nuanced for games released before the cutoff. According to Game File (via Engadget), Sony told developers that they'll still be able to order discs after January 2028 for games that are (or were) released before that date.
Sony reportedly told PlayStation developers that they "will still be able to place re-orders for existing PlayStation disc games." That complements how Sony framed things in its public announcement last week, where it said the move to fully digital releases will have "no impact on games that already released, or will be releasing, prior to January 2028 in disc format."
While this confirms that developers will still be able to re-order discs for their previously released games, Game File notes that the ordering process will be different.
Despite the uproar from the gaming community over Sony's decision, it doesn't look like it has any plans of reversing course. Recent reports indicate Sony has already invested US$ 34 million into converting an Austria-based disc production facility to manufacture optical microlenses instead. According to Game File, Sony has also told publishers it will help them release digital codes for their games at retail stores.
For now, all eyes are on Microsoft to see if it follows Sony's lead in abandoning traditional physical discs. Last week, word broke that Xbox is working on a disc-to-digital program, hinting that it may be leaning in that direction. That said, with major layoffs and studio divestitures at Xbox now official, company leadership no doubt has bigger issues on its plate right now.
